- Cíle předmětu
- This course proposes to introduce a number of features of and positions within the wide-ranging area of critical theory that deals with gender and sexuality. The course does not systematically follow the historical development of these areas of thought, but we do spend time looking at some of the founding figures, texts and movements of what later became known as feminism, such as Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Women and the Victorian debates around the Woman Question, as well as the three successive waves of 20th century feminism. As well as providing an introduction to feminist theory, the course looks at the challenges involved in queer theory and lesbian and gay theory, in preparation for which we spend some time considering the influence of the work of Michel Foucault on late 20th century thought. As the course title suggests, many of the set texts are of a critical orientation (sociological, philosophical etc), and lesson time is spent clarifying and discussing and comparing the ideas expressed in them. We also spend time 'reading' instances of literature, television, film, politics and so on in the light of what we discuss in class.

- Students will have a firm grasp of the terminology deployed in this area of critical theory as well as an overview of the historical development and the current configuration of gender studies. They will also have had ample opportunity to discuss and challenge their own previously held views in the context of gender and sexuality, and practice applying the ideas to film, literature and other forms of ‘text’.
