Course objectives (in Czech)
Students will get an overall picture of the cultural history of English-speaking countries (England, Great Britain and the USA). In the seminar, students will read short texts related to the subject, and followed by a fruitful discussion.
Learning outcomes (in Czech)
Students will get a basic overview of the history of arts and culture in Great Britain and the USA. After the completion of the course, they will be able to define the theoretical concepts and basic symbols and motifs standing behind the cultural issues in the modern world of these countries. Furthermore, they will be able to incorporate the gained knowledge into the framework of the whole study program, and to use it in their future academic or professional endeavours.

Beginnings of American literature. 5. American Revolutionary War. Declaration of Independence. The Constitution. 6. Industrial Revolution in Great Britain. The British Empire. Victorian Era. 7. The Civil War in the US. Abraham Lincoln. Abolitionism. 8. Great Britain and the US in both world wars. 9. Great Britain - postwar era. Thatcherism. New Labour. 10. Postwar US - Civil Rights Movement. Vietnam War. Watergate. 9/11. Obamanomics. 11. American literature - survey. 12. British literature - survey. 13. Music and Arts in Great Britain and the US - postwar era.
