• There is a homework assignment for each unit. (i.e. every two weeks) • 80% attendance and HW completion is required to pass the course. • Course participants are advised to be of at least C1 (advanced) proficiency.

Course objectives
The main aim of the LAC is to compare the prescriptive grammar exemplified in and through coursebooks with a descriptive grammar derived from data relating to how language is actually used, and thereby to raise course participants‘ language awareness as well as develop their ability to think more critically about how grammar is presented and represented.
Syllabus
  • 1 Describing Language (an introductory unit). 2 Tense. 3 Auxiliaries & Operators. 4 Modal Verbs I (focused on extrinsic meanings). 5 Modal Verbs II (focused on intrinsic meanings). 6 Will & Would. 7 Future Forms. 8 Forms with Have (perfect aspect). 9 Forms with Be I (progressive aspect). 10 Forms with Be II (passive voice). 11 The Verb Form. 12 Conditional Sentences. 13 The Noun Phrase. 14 Language as Lexis. • Each unit is taught over two seminars/input sessions - the course stretches over two semesters.
