Course objectives
The series of lectures aims at introducing some basic concepts of English phonetics and phonology on both segmental and suprasegmental level. The main focus of the seminars will be put on pronunciation practice and the development of transcription skills with regard to teaching English as a foreign language.

  • 30/10 Speech and writing; speech organs
  • 6/11 English vowels
  • 13/11 English consonants I (general classification)
  • 20/11 English consonants II (problematic sounds, silent letters)
  • 27/11 Connected speech – linking, elision, assimilation + test
  • 4/12 Syllable and phonotactics
  • 11/12 The nature and placement of word stress
  • 18/12 Sentence stress and weak forms + test
  • 8/1 Rhythm
  • 15/1 Intonation I (pitch range, tone unit, basic tones)
  • 22/1 Intonation II (accentual and grammatical function)
  • 29/1 credit test + teaching pronunciation

Assessment methods
Requirements for credit: no more than 3 absences; homework; successful passing of at least one of the two short tests plus the final credit test from phonemic transcription EXAM: two parts: theoretical and practical (reading aloud)
