Course objectives (in Czech)
To familiarize students with basic terms of morphology. The course will focus on the English verb and differences in the system of tenses in English and other languages. A comparative analysis of given morphological aspects will help to develop students’ analytical approach to language and raise their language awareness.
Learning outcomes (in Czech)
Students will identify certain linguistic concepts in the authentic language material and will be encouraged to compare these phenomena in English and other languages. By the end of the course students will have developed their theoretical linguistic knowledge and will be able to apply it in the authentic language material.
Syllabus (in Czech)
1. Morphemic analysis of words. 2. Word-formation processes 3. Noun categories – gender, number, countability (contrastive approach) 4. Noun categories – definiteness (contrastive approach) 5. The system of tenses I (non-past tenses) 6. The system of tenses II (past-tenses) 7. The system of tense III (tense and aspect – progressive and perfect) 8. Modal verbs can, could. 9. Modal verbs may, might. 10. Modal verbs must, ought to, should, need. 11. Indefinite verb forms I (contrastive approach) 12. Indefinite verb forms II (contrastive approach) 13. Final test
Assessment methods (in Czech)
P/F: submission of all exercises, active participation in the course, successful completion of tests (60%).
