- This is the second of two seminars providing students with an introduction to English literature. The course picks up where it left off in the previous semester and makes the transition to modernist English language literature via emergent themes in late Victorian literature and Edwardian society.
- Learning outcomes (in Czech)
- Students will have a clear sense of the principle developments in English language literature over the last century and a half, specifically of how Modernist literature relates to earlier periods and subsequent developments; they will be familiar with the key themes and techniques of Modernist literature; and they will have further practise of analysing prosody and close reading of prose.

- 1. Situating Modernism: from the Enlightenment to Modernism - changing roles of the artist; course overview. 2. Situating Modernism: Edwardian society and the pre-war scene. 3. Movements & Manifestos: Paris/London ... Futurism, Imagism, Vorticism. 4. Precursors I: late Victorian blues – Hardy. 5. Precursors II: Hardy vs. Conrad. 6. Precursors III: Conrad and Heart of Darkness. 7. War & The War Poets. 8. London, Bloomsbury (I) - Woolf and Mrs Dalloway. 9. London, Bloomsbury (II) - the Bloomsbury group. 10. London, T.S. Eliot & tradition. 11. Paris, the Americans: Hemingway. 12. Paris, the Irish: Joyce. 13. Paris, the Irish: Beckett and postmodernism.
- Assessment methods (in Czech)
- Course requirements for full-time students are a minimum of 75 % attendance and familiarity with the required reading demonstrated through active participation in seminars. Full-time students are also required to pass a test at the end of the first semester and an exam at the end of the second semester. Combined students are required to submit (and pass) two written assignments each semester, pass a test at the end of the first and an exam at the end of the second semester. The final grade is determined by coursework (50 %) and exam results (50 %)
