Course objectives (in Czech)
The objective of the course is to acquaint students with an overview of syntactic structures in English, the positions of individual clausal elements (compulsory and optional), their forms and syntactic functions.
Learning outcomes (in Czech)
The student gains knowledge of basic syntactic terms and transformations and the rules of English sentence formation. They will consolidate analytical skills, which they can further use in both analysis of texts and teaching English as a foreign language.
Syllabus (in Czech)
1. Syntactic units and relations, phrasal grammar. 2. Basic sentence types according to the speaker's intention. 3. Basic clause types according to their syntactic structure. 4. Clausal elements: the subject. 5. The Verb/Predicate. 6. The Object. 7. The Adverbial 8. Sentence modifiers not incorporated in sentence structure. 9. The Attribute, The Complement of subject and object. 10. Complex syntactic analysis of text with focus on the simple sentence.
Assessment methods (in Czech)
The credit is granted on the basis of systematic preparation, active participation in the seminar and a successful completion of the final written test (65%).
