Course objectives (in Czech)
To familiarize students with relevant lexicological notions and terms (word formation, lexical semantics) and lexicography, to enhance students’ awareness of the dynamic character of lexicon, provide students with types of words, semantic relations between them and with an overview of basic types of dictionaries.
Learning outcomes (in Czech)
Students will gain knowledge of word-formation processes and semantic and formal relationships between words and skill to form English words and to illustrate the given relationships between words.
Syllabus (in Czech)
1. Introduction: lexicology - its components, structural conception of vocabulary; basic terms - word, morpheme, affix, lexeme 2. Word formation: derivation (prefixation, suffixation) 3. Word formation: compounding 4. Word formation by shortening the form (reduction processes): back derivation, blends, ellipsis (clipping, embellished clipping, word ellipsis), acronyms, abbreviations 5. Creation of new (meanings of) words without change of their form: conversion, semantic shift, rhetorical figures; loan words 6. Lexical semantics: definition, lexical units, semantics, meaning-meaning, dimensions of lexical meaning; vocabulary categorization 7. Lexical semantics: hyponymy / hyperonymy, meronymy 8. Lexical semantics: synonyms, antonyms 9. Lexical semantics: polysemy, homonymy 10. Lexical semantics: syntagmatic lexical relations - collocation, selection restrictions, phraseology and idiomatics.
Assessment methods (in Czech)
P/F: submission of all assignments and successful completion of the written test (70%). Exam: lexical and lexical-semantic analysis of a section of a text and theoretical issues from the topics covered in the course
