- Course objectives (in Czech)
- Ss will understand how the English sound system works on the segmental level. The reference accent used for the description of individual sounds is General British. Besides the classification of English vowels and consonants, the basic processes of connected speech are also introduced, namely assimilation, elision and linking. The practically oriented section of the course aims at developing Ss’ transcription skills as well as production and perception of selected pronunciation features with respect to the differences between L1 and L2.
- Learning outcomes (in Czech)
- Ss will be able to classify English vowels and consonants according to several criteria and will be able to describe the basic allophonic variations (both their character and distribution). Moreover, Ss will be able to use phonemic transcription of individual words and short expressions both actively and passively. Finally, Ss will be able to identify the main processes of connected speech and employ the studied features in their own speech.

- 1. Linguistic disciplines phonetics and phonology; basic terminology (phoneme, allophone, minimal pair). 2. Speech production. 3. Relationship between speech and writing (basic correspondences between graphemes and phonemes; silent letters). 4. System of English vowels: quality and quantity. 5. System of English consonants: manner and place of articulation, voicing. 6. Allophonic variation (devoicing, aspiration). 7. Comparison of British and American pronunciation standards on the segmental level. 8. Connected speech (assimilation, elision, linking).

- regular attendance, active participation in seminars, successful passing of the final credit test consisting of theoretical and practical parts (70 %), reading aloud
